July 26, 1945 - May 8, 2020
Susan grew up in Grand Rapids and lived her adult life in Minneapolis, where she met her husband, John. In 1968, they were married by a justice of the peace at his office above Serini's Pizza and remained married for 52 years. Sue passed away from cancer on May 8, 2020, at the age of 74.
Sue was an avid reader, an Outlander superfan, loved quirky independent films, and particularly excelled at games of all types. She loved hosting large family gatherings for the holidays and serving homemade pasta. The North Shore of Lake Superior was a favorite vacation spot where Sue encouraged family hikes through the birch forest and quiet moments to explore and enjoy nature. A passionate advocate for the Democratic party, she often served as a delegate for her precinct. Throughout her life, Sue volunteered in her community, serving on the neighborhood board, committees, and at many events. She also enjoyed working as a paraprofessional in the Minneapolis Schools. Preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Cecelia DeBellis and her son, Luke Bode. Survived by her husband, John; daughter, Jill Bode (Mark Hillyer) and son Justin Bode (Amy); grandchildren Alison and Jack Bode; brothers Alan DeBellis (Tanya) and James DeBellis (Melanie): and many nieces and nephews.
Sue will be buried at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN, in a private ceremony.
Memorials will be donated to the South High School Foundation for special education and the Democratic National Committee (you may tell us your preference.)
Dear John and family,
Sorry for the loss of your wife-sounds like you had a wonderful and long life together. My thoughts are with you.
From our PMM/KPMG days.
John and Family: I was so sadded to see of Sue’s passing. She connected with me on facebaook a few years ago. I feel badly we did not have the opportunity to meet up again in person. I so hoped we could go to see her neice perform. I still remember the day you got married – and her dad’s surprise of being able to be there. I was thrilled when she asked me to be her attendent. I still have the pictures. I was pleased to read about all the good works she had became involved in.. She will be missed by many. My deepest sympathies to you John and all your family. Dianne Nesburg
