Edward Daniel Pagel was born October 27, 1942, in Minneapolis MN. He was a member of the 1960 graduating class of Washburn High School. After high school, he joined the United States Marine Corps, and served his country. Ed married Darlene Mae Kasell on October 3, 1964. At the time of his passing, they had recently celebrated 58 years of marriage.
Dad worked for Taystee Bread Company for 25+ years, as a route salesman and a supervisor. He served as shop steward and fought for the working man in this capacity. Upon retirement, Dad went to work for US Bank. Mom and Dad were long time faithful members of Ebenezer Lutheran Brethren Church, on 41st and Cedar. They formed many long-lasting friendships there that remain strong today. Along with the spiritual fulfillment they experienced at church, Dad also greatly enjoyed pitching for many years on the church softball team. As the years began to take some of his athletic prowess, it did not dampen his enthusiasm for the team, always encouraging his teammates and enjoying the fellowship. Dad was an avid reader, enjoyed golfing and the occasional poker game with work friends, and social activities with church friends. A loving, faithful, hardworking son, brother, husband and father, he always made the effort to show the importance of family to his children and grandchildren. Dad was a strong believer in family. He dearly loved his in-laws as well as his birth family, and this feeling was reciprocated. He did his best to impart integrity, work ethic, honesty, and a love for God into his children. He was very outgoing, quick to smile and make a joke, and made the effort to make a friend or stranger feel accepted.
Ed was preceded in death by his father, LuVerne; his mother, Marion; older sister, Nancy; brother, Paul; and infant daughter, Christine. He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene; his son, Dan (Marie) Pagel; his daughter, Becky (Tim) Hall; sister, Martha (Jim) Boman; sister, Karen (Bob) Colin; grandsons, Jeff Pagel, Brandon Hall, Blake Hall; granddaughter, Brianna Hall; and great-grandson [once removed], Asher McCarthy, and several beloved nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend our gratitude to the staff at NorBella Assisted Living, and Minnesota Hospice, for providing incredible care and comfort to Dad and Mom during this emotionally and physically draining time. Dad is at peace now, and the family is comforted in the knowledge that he now resides with his Lord.
Although flowers are appreciated, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice in honor of Ed or to the family directly.

Ed was great man, It has been a great honor to him. I loved his laugh, his humor was dry at times, but he certainly was funny. I know my mom and dad enjoyed his friendship and now my dad has another friend to hangout with in heaven. Also Ed taught me how to pitch in softball in my youth.. thanks for all the great memories. My Uncle Ed was a very special man. He was Santa Claus as all of the grands grew up, until I asked why Santa was wearing Uncle Ed’s shoes? Didn’t manjeri me popular with the adults but Ed thought it was funny! I am the oldest grandchild and he picked on me forever, as I grew up I gave it as good as I got it. You will be missed but I will see you again. I love you Uncle Ed always & forever. Dar, Dan &. Becky I send you all my hugs, love & prayers!!
I don’t think there are words big enough to describe Ed’s personality; I’ll always remember his easy laugh and teasing of his kids- and whichever of his kids’ friends was present. I knew him as long as I’ve known my own parents; their friendship with Ed & Darlene spanning decades, and included bestowing the title GodFather upon Ed on behalf of my younger brother, Chris. There must have been something in those Sunday Ebenezer sermons that enabled my father & Ed to finish the gigantic Lalapalooza ice cream dessert at the old Bridgeman’s restaurant- which, if memory serves, was almost as tall as us kids. We pray such memories bring a measure of comfort at this time, and we send all our family’s collective love and prayers to the Pagel family… big hugs especially to Dan, Becky & Darlene- we love you all
One of the first times I met Ed was when he was driving Ebenezer’s big blue Sunday School bus and picked me up at Frontier Hall (my dorm) at the University of Minnesota on a Sunday morning in the late 1960’s. We played a lot of softball together on Ebenezer’s team over the years and even more golf at Ft. Snelling and Rich Acres with our fellow golfers from church too. He was very committed to the Ebenezer Men’s Breakfast and did his share of the cooking for those Saturday morning gatherings. When I saw him for the last time while he was in hospice he impressed me with his overflowing thankfulness for the blessings he had had throughout his life…blessed be his memory and may the Lord bless and minister to all of his family as they travel through this time of mourning.
