Mikael J. Carlson - Morris Nilsen Funeral Chapel

July 2, 1981 - April 2, 2025

Mikael Jereld Carlson, age 43, of Minneapolis, passed away peacefully at Abbott Northwestern Hospital on April 2, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Mikael was born in South Dakota and moved to Minnesota with his family as a young boy. He was a loveable rascal who spent his time learning karate and riding dirt bikes. He graduated from Lakeville High School in 1999 and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Metro State University in 2008.

Mikael enjoyed a career in management with his most recent position as dining services manager for Summit Place. He took great joy and satisfaction in caring for the residents of Summit Place.

Mikael will always be remembered for being a fierce protector of the underdog whether they be human or pet, his witty humor, and his love of motorcycles, coffee, watches and his “bride” Elizabeth. The Minnesota State Fair became one of his favorite events when he and Elizabeth spent their honeymoon week soaking up the fair food and fun in 2017. He had a passion for good food and enjoyed cooking while jamming out to 90’s rap music. His 100% commitment to whatever new hobby he would pursue was evident in his detailed and deliberate searches for the ultimate version of a bowling ball, golf club, or kneeboard. Those that love him remember his deep and passionate conversations about specialty and gourmet coffee beans and the art of coffee brewing methods.

Mikael had a special relationship with his niece Sophie and was the ultimate “show up” uncle. He enjoyed embarrassing her with his “Sophiebutt” antics and loving banter about boys meeting her uncle Mikael in a dirty white tank top and cut offs. He bought her the best and most unpredictable gifts and bestowed her with his sly humor and genuine laughter. He also had a close childhood connection with his cousin Emy. They spent time playing hide and seek in Grandpa Jerry’s tire shop, playing arcade games, and swimming. Mikael loved to wake her up at 4:00 AM to sneak big bowls of cereal and watch cartoons.

Mikael will be deeply mourned and forever loved by his wife, Elizabeth Selander; sister, Dori (Keith) Seegar; niece, Sophie Seegar; stepfather, Dan Birgen; grandmother, Marvel Carlson; uncle, Paul Carlson; mother-in-law, Lucy Selander; sisters in-law, Christina Selander Bouzouina, and Andrea (Jim) Schubert; nephews, Ilyas, Jalis, Sofian, Jack, and Luke, as well as many cousins and cherished friends. He is preceded in death by his mother, Tammy Carlson, grandfather, Carl “Jerry” Carlson, and uncle, Pete Carlson.

In honor of Mikael's love for his furry children Piper, Riley, and John K, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Doberman Rescue Minnesota.
