Albert J. Mayer - Morris Nilsen Funeral Chapel

Albert John "Al" Mayer, age 93, of Edina, died peacefully in his sleep on April 24, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Hermine; his wife, Irene Grace; brothers, John, Joseph (Theresa) and Leopold, and grandsons, Haakon and Sigfrid. Survived by daughter, Julie (Greg) Arnott, of Edina; son, John (Lampang) Mayer, PhD, of Colorado; grandson, Darrin (Sandy) Kamon, of Plymouth, MN; granddaughter, Jody (Ryan) Kamon, PhD, of Vermont; great-grandsons, Aidan and Rowan Jensen and Luke and Broc Kamon; sister-in-law, Joan, of NYC; nieces, Barbara Eannazzo, NY; Lori Mayer (Vincent) Tricoli, NY and Nancy Mayer (Tim) Mihalski, of DE; Al was born in Hungary and came to the US in 1928. He grew up in New York City and attended CCNY before entering service in the US Army in WWII. He served at the U of M in the ASTP program where he met Grace. They were married March 18, 1944. He next served in the Philippines and Japan. Upon discharge, he attended the U of M and earned a BSME degree. He then worked for Shell Oil Co. in illinois, Archer Daniels in Minneapolis and for 33 years for MDU companies in Minneapolis and Bismarck, ND. He retired as Vice President in 1987. They moved to Edina in 1992. Al and Grace lived in Richfield 1953-1968 and were active in the community. Al served on the Richfield School Board 1960-1967, aswell as Little League Baseball, PTA, Safety Council, etc. He was also active in their churches in MN and ND.

Memorials preferred to Woodlake Church or to the University of Minnesota Foundation for scholarships to the College of Science and Engineering.
