Darrell Dean Sampson - Morris Nilsen Funeral Chapel

May 7, 1942 - March 9, 2025

Darrell Dean Sampson

Age 82, of Minneapolis, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

Darrell was born on May 7, 1942 in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bangor, Wisconsin. He spent his early life in the fields and creeks around Bangor, Wisconsin, hunting and fishing.

After finishing school, Darrell served his country in Korea for 2 years.

On April 22, 1967, he married his high school sweetheart, Karla Rose Piske, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. They lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota their entire marriage and were blessed with two daughters, Robyn and Kelly.

For 37 years, Darrell was a delivery driver/salesman for Anhauser Busch. As he made his deliveries over the years, he became a trusted vendor and friend to everyone he worked with. Some of those friendships extended after retirement and became cherished friendships.

Darrell appreciated the beauty of God's creation every moment he could. He thoroughly enjoyed hunting and fishing. He would take his family on fishing trips but his patience often ran out! Darrell was well known for his patience - or rather - lack of! Everyone had to be quick on their feet to keep up with him! Cooking was also a favorite pastime. He loved trying a new recipe and passed along many of those recipes to his family. Darrell was always ready for a game of poker and would often go bowling on different leagues with family and friends.

Darrell always liked to joke around with a play on words. Family practically needed a dictionary to keep track of his silly sayings.

Darrell’s faith and love of family were the most cherished things in his life. They meant the world to him. He never missed a chance to hear God’s word on a Sunday morning, usually being one of the first to arrive.

After Darrell retired, he and Karla enjoyed many trips to see family and travel to various places in the US. Eventually Alzheimer's caused them to remain closer to home. When the time came, Darrell moved into memory care at Wealshire in Bloomington. During the almost four years he was there, the entire staff became an addition to his own family. The love and care they provided not only to him, but his whole family, was something that will always be treasured.

Darrell was preceded in death by parents, Lester and Mildred Sampson; and two grandchildren.

He is survived by wife of almost 58 years, Karla Sampson; daughters, Robyn (Dan) Swiderski of Minneapolis, MN and Kelly (Dan) Nommensen of Mequon, WI; grandchildren, Tyler (Hannah) Swiderski, Kyle (Olivia) Swiderski, Ryan Swiderski, Kayla Nommensen and Joshua Nommensen; great-granddaughters, Karley and Avery Swiderski; brothers, David (Joddie) Sampson of Bangor, WI and Randy Sampson of LaCrosse, WI; sister-in-law, Koleen Piske of Minneapolis, MN; and a large extended family, cherished friends and his Pilgrim Church family.

Memorials preferred to Pilgrim Lutheran Church.

  1. Randall Schumacher says:

What a wonderful guy. He and Karla would regularly come to our office and we would talk about everything, and eventually their finances. They were both very conscientious about their retirement planning. We became friends! I think about both Darrell and Karla all the time and our association with Pilgrim Church. May he be in peace.

What a blessing Darrell has been in the lives of all who knew him, and such an honor to call him my cousin & friend. I am so pleased to have the memories and photos of my grandson with Darrell a few years ago, sharing laughter together. From mom’s memories, she also spoke highly of Darrell, telling endearing stories of his childhood, his integrity, his dedication and his kindness. I am so sorry I could not be there today, but my thoughts, love & virtual hugs are with you Karla, Kelly & Robyn and your sweet families. His imprint on our lives continues.

He will be missed dearly. He was a great Uncle in law. I remember when he always came down for hunting and stayed at our house. All the joys, talks and laughs.
May your angel wings keep going and watching over your family.
    Fly high my angel
