Joan Winkels - Morris Nilsen Funeral Chapel

September 15, 1932 - August 9, 2017

Joan Elizabeth Winkels
Age 84, formerly of Edina, passed away Aug. 9, 2017. Joan was born Sept. 15, 1932 to Silverius (Hannigan) and Jay Harriman in Mankato, MN. At an early age, her family moved to Star Lake in Dent, MN. She graduated from Perham High School. Married Thomas A. Winkels and lived in the Diamond Lake Area in South Minneapolis, where they raised three daughters. While the girls were young, Joan volunteered at their school and was a Girl Scout leader. She then worked at Norwest Bank for 20 years. Through the years the family spent many summers at Star Lake, where she enjoyed bird watching and gardening. Joan courageously battled Parkinson’s disease for 30+ years. Survived by children, Susan (Pat) Devane of Shoreview, MN, Anne Marie (Mark) Monte of Salt Lake City, UT and Sherri (Eugene) Simon of Fargo, ND; grandchildren, Michael (Caryn), Brian (Brittaney), Tim (Cassie), Christopher, Caitie, Peter, Mary and Andrew; great-grandchildren, Harrison, Oliver and Theodore. Joan was preceded in death by Thomas and their infant son, Jeffrey. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at Benedictine Health Care Center for their loving care of Joan, along with Dr. Steven Stein and Allina Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, memorials suggested to the National Parkinson’s Foundation of MN.

My deepest sympathies to Anne Monte and her family. I never knew Anne’s mother as I am a client she works with but I do know that any Mom who raised a beautiful individual like Anne must have been very special. On behalf of Mohawk Valley Health System and Team Bravo Members, may the love from friends and family carry your heavy hearts. Sending love and moments of comfort to you all.

We extend our deepest sympathy on the loss of your mom Joan. My dad Adam was a brother to your dad. There were a number of years in age between my dad (the oldest boy) and your dad (the youngest, right?) We didn’t get to visit with you and your family that much. My half brother, Don Niccum, graduated with your mom. He remembers her well. I do remember Aunt Joan & Uncle Tom’s wedding day – what a cute couple they made. Your mom was a special lady – so kind and outgoing. May God be near with his love and strength as you go through this time of sadness.
    Love and Prayers,

    Dorvin and De’lori’s (Winkels) Wendt

Susan, Anne Marie, and Sherri, this message is being sent on behalf of Pat Bell, a longtime friend of your Mother. I am one of Pats daughters. Our Mom will not be able to attend visitation or Mass for your Mother due to her failing health. Our Moms were part of a group of ladies who forged lasting friendships from their days raising their families at the Church of the Resurrection. My sister Carol remembers your Mom well, Joan was her hair and nails model when Carol did her Cosmetology State Board Exam in 1976. On behalf of our Mom, the Bells send our condolences to your family at this sad time. As they say at Mass “Peace be with you”.
