Mary Lou Roberts - Morris Nilsen Funeral Chapel

October 12, 1926 - May 11, 2024


Mary Lou Roberts, age 97, of Edina, formerly of Richfield, passed away May 11, 2024.

Mary Lou was born in Little Falls, MN to Simon and Catherine Wielinski on Oct 12, 1926. She grew up as the eldest in a family of 15 on a farm west of Little Falls. She married Edwin H. Roberts on May 7, 1948 at the Basilica of St Mary, Minneapolis. Together they raised two daughters. He preceded her in death in 1985.

Besides caring for her family, Mary Lou worked at various clerical jobs, and participated in many hobbies including bridge, 500, gardening; traveled and joined the many celebrations and events of her large extended family. She traveled often with friends and family including many Elderhostels with her friends June, Ruth and Jerry. She has been a member of St. Peter’s Church since 1952. At age 79 she moved to 7500 York Senior living, making new friends and joining many of their activities and clubs.

She is survived by her daughters, Diane (David) Blake and Gail Roberts; grandchildren, Jillian (Shelby) Melton, Scott (Trisha) Blake, Karen (Andrew)
LaVenture, Elizabeth Chun, Andrew (Kayla Jackson) Chun and Margaret Chun; great-grandchildren, William, Lucy, Vivian, Benjamin, Matthew, Juliet, Maxwell and Nathan; siblings, Lorraine LeMieur, Jim (Carol) Wielinski, Ann Schomer, John Wielinski, Janet (Dan) Childs, Cathy Bolme, Mike (Clarice) Wielinski, Sharon Loscheider; sisters-in-law, Kay Wielinski, Lucille Wielinski and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; parents, Simon and Catherine; brothers, Albert, Simon, Richard; and sisters, Leona Munsch, Irene McCulloch and Evelyn Bryniarski.

Her favorite place to visit in the Twin Cities was the MN Landscape Arboretum, especially in the spring when the flowering crab trees and tulips were blooming. Memorials may be directed there. A fitting tribute in her name will be made this summer.

The family would especially like to thank the staff at York Gardens and MN Hospice for the compassionate care they provided for Mary Lou in her last two years.

    I’m so sorry for your loss. My mom Dorothy Cosgrove was her good friend. They had many gardening adventures! My mom died I think 9 years ago. I miss her every single day. My sister, Cathy were holding her hands when she passed. May God bless you and your family. Sue Cosgrove Jacobson
