Your dad was a sweet and kind man. I bought a heck of a lot of balloons from him during my teaching career. Donna I am sorry I can’t be there but my heart and prayers go out to you and your family.
Jennie Engstrom-Ott
Class of 81
Thanks so much Jennifer you are so sweet!!!
Bernice and I first met Dick and Shirley when Steve and Barb were married, Bernice went to school with Barb and I went to school with Steve. They spent some time living there at Dick’s house and we visited them there. They were always very nice and welcoming and he had a cool garage. Then as time went on I kept seeing Dick at the dealership where I worked Coon Rapids. He kept me up on the family and I did the same. Dick always remembered me on sight which kind of surprised me because we seldom ran into each other and I didn’t spend a lot of time at his house, I was impressed. He had an easy way about him that made it easy to get to know him and like him. When he’d show up at the dealership and I’d spot him I’d always call out ” hey balloon guy” and he always laughed and said are you still working here?
Todd thanks so much for your kind words your very kind !! Donna his Daughter
I don’t know if Dick would remember me or not as he was my baseball coach for only one season when I was 13 and Dale was 15. Since I’ve grown up I’ve coached many dozens of baseball teams myself and I can honestly say that the things I specifically remember that Dick taught me about pitching and the little details of the game really helped spark my lifelong love of baseball. He knew a lot and taught us very well and many of the things that I teach the kids today are things I learned that one season with Dick. My dad coached with him and Mike Waggoner that year and I learned about fairness and patience from dad and fiery competitiveness from Mike but I learned the game from Dick.
Donna and Dale may remember me from those days and I’m so sorry for your loss. I just heard about this and wanted you to know that your dad made a lasting impression and I’m lucky to have had an opportunity to pass some of the lessons i learned to another generation of kids.
